P2P Safety, avoid the viruses.

The "please download the latest software to view this video or listen to this mp3" (WARNING)

Recently many mp3’s and videos on P2P programs (also on facebook/my space) contain code that attempts to download a virus by tricking the user into thinking that they need updated players/codec etc.

If you download any songs or videos from a P2P program that asks you to download the latest software (codec’s, flash player, media player updates) DONT! - 99% of the time you will be downloading a virus.

If you believe you really do need updated software or codec’s, then at least download the latest software from a trusted website. Use the links below (ALL FREE)

Codec’s (audio and video)

My favourite is K-Lite Codec Pack. This is available as BASIC, STANDARD and FULL versions. If your just playing movies, avi, mp3s etc. All you need is the basic or standard version. The full version is for people that intend to convert videos etc.

If you need a different player or codec not listed above, Google it and find out as much as you can about it, and find a safe place to download it from.

NEVER download it from a link given to you from attempting to play a video or music file downloaded via P2P program.

If you search for an mp3 or video and get the following results, it’s more than likely a virus.
(This list contains all the latest FALSE files)

1, Any mp3 that is less than 1000 KB (1MB) is almost definitely a fake mp3

2, Any mp3 that is less then 3000 KB(3MB) is possible a fake mp3

3, Most mp3’s are between 3000-7000 KB, but if that mp3 asks you to download software/codecs to play it, then its more than likely a VIRUS.

4, If the file extension/type is ‘au’ or ‘snd’ its fake.

5, If the title contains one of the following it’s most likely a fake/virus.

Test this for yourself, load limewire and click search audio, then type some random letters in the search box, something like ‘sdfgsdfgds’ now click search.

Watch the fake files come up, I bet you get some of the above listed and probably more. (DONT ATTEMPT TO DOWNLOAD THEM)

How? These results are generated by the hackers software, it takes your search and makes up file names based on what you typed in the search box.
